Get to know the weirdos behind The Sub

  • Tim and Micki Hassemer

    FOUNDER/OWNER

The idea began with a simple What If, and one thing led to another, the stars aligned, and the birth of The Subterrain was born.

Being owners of both Sticks and Stones Handmade and Durango Winery, starting a business from the ground up was not unfamiliar territory for Tim and Micki. Both have been independent artists for their entire lives in one way or another: Tim, coming from a music and woodworking background, and Micki, a photographer and full-time custom jewelry maker.

Envisioning a place as unique as this came quite easily for the two, and with one foot in front of the other, the seed of an idea blossomed into an event space unlike any other. And this is only the beginning…

  • Megan Riddle

    FOUNDER/SHENANIGAN MAKER

A strange underground basement with blank walls to paint crazy eyeballs and odds spaces to do literally whatever we want? Sign me up!

Traveling with a renaissance fair and living in Alaska for nine years are just several of the many things that formed Megan into the amazingly creative and artistic person that she is. Her extensive background in turning-nothing-into-something, along with her familiarity of working with Tim and Micki selling handmade shenanigans at Sticks and Stones, made her the perfect companion for jumping on board this ship in its early days of conception.

The sky is the limit when it comes to Megan’s gift at transforming one mans junk into another mans treasure, and there is no place on earth where that is welcomed more than The Subterrain.

  • Matthew Haynes

    FOUNDER/FEATURED ARTIST

The walls were blank, and the ideas were many, and after countless sleepless nights dreaming about what-this-could-be and what-that-could-be, the decision to move from California to Colorado was made, and the pleasure of never-ending-painting began.

With a background in doodling with a pen and pencil, it was a surprisingly quick transition switching to paint, at least when it comes to mushrooms and mountains and the irregular shapes of caves, and Matt was excited for the challenge.

It was very clear in the early stages of development that The Subterrain hit his creative nerve with a sledgehammer, and with a special team already in place, located in a special town, diving into the strange and unusual of The Subterrain seemed like a very not-strange and unusual thing to do.

  • Kristi

    FOUNDER/ADMIN

Whatever it takes. Whatever is needed. That is Kristi. That is her love for The Subterrain.

Having an already established relationship with Tim and Micki both as friends, and the business of Sticks and Stones - a place where she can showcase and sell her creative handmade art - before The Subterrain could even come calling, Kristi came running and jumping at any opportunity available.

With a background in Human Resources, being on the ‘technical’ side of things (along with all the other help she provides) was an easy avenue to jump into, and boy oh boy is The Subterrain happy to have her. She is a foundational piece of this crazy-fun event space, and her energy and commitment to Team Weirdo is what this business thrives on in order to grow and take this thing to whatever possibilities the sky may hold.
